About

In 2009 legislation was proposed in Uganda to make acts of homosexuality punishable by death. This legislation is referred to as the 'Kill the Gays' Bill, or the Bahati Bill, after David Bahati, the Minister who first introduced it.

In February 2014 the bill was signed into law by President Museveni, with the removal of the death penalty in favour of life imprisonment. The bill also carries custodial sentences for any member of the public who does not report someone they suspect of being gay, including friends, family and colleagues.

Alongside this legislation, Uganda has witnessed growing hostility towards gay people. Leading rights activist David Kato was murdered in 2011, following a media campaign by Ugandan tabloid Rolling Stone to out gay people and 'hang them'. This media approach has been continued by Red Pepper.

Kill the Bill is an independent blog, not run by Sexual Minorities Uganda, Freedom & Roam UgandaUganda Gay on Move or any of the other LGBT/Human Rights organisations, though we support all of them in their campaign for equality.

Our mission is simply to document the continuing struggle for gay rights in Uganda, bringing readers the latest updates from a wide range of sources.
